The Humback Whale Adventure

25th September - 4th October 2026

Southern Mozambique

And now to the ocean! I’ve spent many years on its surface and beneath its waves pursuing my own marine conservation goals in tandem with scientists, conservationists and fellow advocates.

Every elemental encounter, whether it be scuba diving, snorkelling, surfing, paddle boarding, sailing or just simply swimming reminds me how privileged I am to be able to enjoy this ecosystem, even though, like most of its natural inhabitants, we humans are not very well adapted. But it is this putting ourselves physically and directly into different environments that helps us understand their beauty, value and the threats facing them.

This BRAND NEW adventure takes us to the crystal clear waters of Mozambique, giving you the opportunity to witness humpback whales up close, to learn about them and the pressures they face. Expect awe inspiring encounters, either from a boat, or at eye level, on a paddleboard.

A unique opportunity to support real whale research alongside expert marine biologists – no science background required, just an open mind and a willingness to immerse yourself in the action.

Ocean is more ancient than the mountains and freighted with the memories and the dreams of time
— H.P. Lovecraft

Designed to be an adventure with purpose, our days will be filled with guided humpback whale watching trips and paddle boarding with whales to observe and collect behavioural data. We’ll also explore estuaries on seahorse safaris in the warm Mozambican waters, and collect coral watch data on snorkels over the reef.

Based out of beautiful sea-view accommodation just steps from the beach, this adventure offers endless viewing opportunities, as humpback whales migrate just behind the local reef, visible from your balcony. Don’t forget your binoculars!

Throughout your stay, you’ll enjoy private chef-prepared meals, sundowners with a view, and the chance to unwind between outings. This is the perfect conservation getaway for any woman who wants to contribute meaningfully to marine science while relaxing in one of the most beautiful, untouched parts of Africa.

What to expect

Day 1

Fly into Inhambane or Vilanculos Airport and begin your journey to the stunning Catalina Lodge, perched above a beautiful reef, with incredible views of the humpback whale migration. Meet your fellow adventurers, settle into your room, or take a dip in the pool. As evening falls, gather for a communal dinner crafted by our in-house chef, overlooking the ocean. Drift off to sleep in comfortable beds, lulled by the rhythmic sound of breaking waves.

Days 2-9

We’ll greet the day with either sunrise yoga or dawn paddle boarding with humpback whales. Our itinerary remains intentionally flexible allowing us to follow the rhythms of the weather and the ocean, however during your time here you can expect ~

  • Dawn yoga/meditation practice

  • Paddle boarding with humpback whales

  • Contributing to vital citizen science conservation research

  • Ocean Safaris with hydrophones

  • Introduction to coral reef monitoring

  • Coral Watch snorkels

  • Meeting local women & cultural tour

Day 10

After a final breakfast, say goodbye to new found friends and head back to the airport to start your journey home or onward to other parts of Africa.

Please note, a good level of fitness and agility is required to paddleboard through the surf, and climb into a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) in rough water. You need to be confident in deep water and a good swimmer.
