The Humback Whale Adventure

September 2026

Southern Mozambique

Despite being the third largest creature in the ocean and the largest shark in the world, the whale shark remains one of the most mysterious creatures on the planet. Travel with me to Tanzania to assist with a global citizen science project to learn more about these extraordinary ocean dwellers and ensure their survival for generations to come.

The shallow waters surrounding this tranquil island host a huge aggregation of whale sharks and coral reefs that we will explore by boat, collecting valuable conservation data.

Start the year with a truly memorable retreat on Mafia Island, Tanzania, offering up-close encounters with whale sharks and other marine life whilst giving time for you to slow down and truly appreciate where you are.

Our days will be filled with a mix of exploration and contemplation, retreating after an exhilarating morning with whale sharks to the relaxation of our charming exclusive-use accommodation taking time to stretch, swim, meditate and come together to set our intentions for the year ahead.

We’ll also have two days exploring the marine national park snorkelling over coral gardens, swimming in the ‘blue lagoon’ and discovering the exquisite island of Chole.

Ocean is more ancient than the mountains and freighted with the memories and the dreams of time
— H.P. Lovecraft

Whale sharks gather around the coast of Mafia Island between October and February so we are fortunate to be in the best position to witness these magnificent yet endangered ocean giants.

There’s no question that swimming with whale sharks is a complete adrenaline rush – these gentle giants appear to be swimming ever so slowly, yet when you follow them you witness their true power and grace.

Warm tropical waters teeming with life are a constant privilege to encounter, just looking beneath the surface, opens up another world.  On this retreat we’ll take the time to consider our own inner world, delve into where we are at present and lean into moving forward with ease.

This retreat offers the chance to encounter one of the true giants of the ocean with the opportunity to reconnect to yourself whilst inspiring a deep-rooted passion for ocean conservation.
